Went by: Janis Bartel

Seasons worked: 1973-1974

Funny Story or happening:

For a teenager, I thought it was the funnest place to work. Have been trying to get my teenage daughter to work there for the past three years. I remember those "after hour" employee parties and competitions in the park. Anyone remember watching old movies in the Southern Palace at midnight? Or racing canoes? I also remember in 1973, girls could not drive the trams. It was a big deal in 1974, when they let us drive and the boys spiel. I remember the "compound" had the BEST grilled ham and cheese sandwiches! And remember those awful TANS from working in the sun in short sleeves and skooter skirts???

Seasons worked: 1996-1999

Funny Story or happening:

Working at six flags is something I never will forget. I remeber before opening one morning how iwas doing the safety check on flume 2 I believe. I was rubber boots so big for me and really tall that i sounded like a horse clomping trhough the trough. A hole was at the bottom of the boots and i also had to step in to trash bags before i put the boots on. I remember Jeff(i think) hope i am right pretending on a hot day to throw in the water at flume, Never did but it was still funny if you were there.Another thing I remember from working at the log ride when one of the boats got stuck at the bottom of the hill and me and other people how to get it unstuck. logs were backed up on the hill and it was horrible. What else....... I do want to say one thing I trained someone to work on conqusitador as a driver and eventually even though i was their longer they were promoted to a red to a red tag and on. If someone can explain to me why after 3 seasons i was never bumped up to a red tag. thanks for listening to me comment on this for a minute Anyone from any area or sections or rides who know me please e-mail thanks!!!!!!

Tony Collins

Seasons worked: 1996-2001

Funny Story or happening:

Not too many things just jump right out....but I do remember the karaoke nights at Humperdinks, one in particular when a certain female officer (though short-lived) decided to show the crowd her numerous piercings...while in uniform...or the wreck we had as a group in San Antonio for All-Stars in 2000. Nothing like piling out of the van half-drunk in a city you dont know!!

I had to move on in the early part of 2001...I'm now gainfully employed as a dispatcher for the Mansfield Police Dept..though I miss everyone I worked with. You guys are the greatest...and to all the Sgt's, Lt's, Cal and Chief...I have never worked for a better group of people than the supervisors I had in my time at the park

Michael Day

Seasons worked: 1969-1970

Funny Story or happening:

This is not necessarily a funny story, though there are some humerous elements. Since I did not see a venue for the information I wanted to give, I decided to do it here.
My family has quite a long history with Six Flags Over Texas. My father worked with Angus Wynne at Wynnewood Village in Dallas, when Angus told him his plans for building an amusement park, Six Flags Over Texas. My dad told him he thought it was a crazy idea, and of course, went with him to embark on that journey together. My father is Roy L. Day, Jr. He worked in the construction of the park, later became the purchasing agent, and eventually vice president of Great Southwest Corperation, the parent company of Six Flags at that time.
His long term employment and relationship with Mr. Wynne has been the osource of many stories, some quite funny. My sister, Diane Day at the time, now Diane Willeford, having met and married her husband, Jimmy Willeford, at Six Flags. I will let her tell her own story on here. I was next to work there. My mother took a job in the Six Flags ticket office not too long ago, and has since retired. My daughter followed in the family tradition, and worked at Six Flags, marking the third generation of my family's history with the park.
I am glad to have found this site. I attended the reunion held at River Legacy Park a couple years ago, but missed last summer's. We have several items which could be of interest to the group, old park maps, pictures, Host and Hostess handbook, newspaper articles, artifacts, and souveniers, as well as many stories we can share with everyone

Mitzi Lee

Went by: Mitzi Reed

Seasons worked: 1980 - 1984

Funny Story or happening:

Let's see there were so many good times out there. I first started in 1980 working in wardrobe on the front counter. I had a really good time working there cause I got to work getting the clothes for all the guys. In 1981 I went to work on the parking lot. That is when my life really changed. I was a sweet and innocent little girl then things started changing. I hung around people like Debbie Kamyskec(silver dollar),Jamie Minton(she called everyone a peach fuzz),Frank Verdin(I would die for you!Hey!), Ruben Gonzales(well we all know about him),Neal Worsham(He had a bigger heart than people really new!),Kevin Tipton(Party Man),Randy Spur(had to wash after Kelly McDaniels threw-up on him),Jim Wallace(Wally, a very sweet guy), D.C. Tong(a sweetie). I could go on and on.
I can remember at one of the all night parties Donna Eberle always had her parents motorhome in the overflow parking lot. We really partied hard that night. I also remember a time going to Kevin Tipton's house & me, Stacy Smith & Debbie K. decided to get back at Doug Hyde, Stacy hide in Kevin's closet & Debbie in the closet, I well lets say got Doug to the bare neccessities & we all at the same time yelled "you have just been p. teased. We ran out the room laughing soooo hard.(sorry doug!!)
Another funny time was a Senior Night, I was on the back of a tram talking to some really cute guys & we were almost at the front gate when Cathy Johnson saw me talking to those cute guys & she started waveing & me & those guys & she ran into the tram that was stopped in front of her, poor Chris Hennaman he went flying. To those of you who don't know, Cathy Johnson passed away a few years ago on her Birthday. Cathy had a very rare lung disease. There was a few of us at her funeral, she is really missed!!!(God Bless).
On a lighter note who can forget those Barcardi Bros. parties? Hiding in the shower to hear the gossip & peek at the guys!? Until we got busted!!
I remember a party that Carlos Caronza had that was nothing but a hugh drink fest & trying to out drink the wharehouse guys, the no where to go to the bathroom cause the clubhouse toilet was clogged & overflowing.
Doug Garriety had a party once at his house & they all had been playing quarters well we had just walked in the door and just about got knocked down by people that were playing quater or watching when we asked them what was going on Caroline said that she had to burp & well she ralphed oooooooo. Boy was I glad that I had gotten there late.
I still keep in touch with a few people. Kelly Gonzales(McDaniel),Ruben Gonzales, Michelle Bell(Wallace), James Bell, Mary Fuller, Zee Reno(Zimmerman).
I am married now for almost 6 yrs to Philip Lee he is from Florida & we have a boy that is 5 named Reed Lee. I work at Bailey Toliver Chevrolet in the Parts Dept.(I like to work with guys!!) I live in Haskell, TX(60 miles N. of Abilene) I am in the sticks! We can go see a movie at a drive in in Rule(remember those nights on Monday & tuesday @ the drive-in in Grand Prairie?) or if we won't to go to see a movie at a theater we have to go to Abilene. The nearest Walmart is in Stamford 15 miles from here, everthing here closes up @ 5pm.
I sure do miss the convience of everthing being close. I don't miss the traffic though. My husband is a welder & drives to Abilene to work.

David Iwanicki

Seasons worked: 1987-1988

Funny Story or happening:

Tram races and PLS from the top (no really the TOP) of the Tower and the lift hill of the Bobsled...like it did any good!

not funny in hindsight: I lived in Double Oak and commuted 30+ miles each way to work at SFOT. I was pulled over by a Grapevine cop one night, evidently I was sleeping during the drive oven Grapevine Dam... wonder how many times I did that without the police escort?? A month later I was weaving down the DFW airport service roads on the way to you know where when the driver's seat snapped off - leaving me flat on my back, but I didn't lose stride or control. A little SFOT bailing wire and it was good as new!

Names I remember: Pettigrew, Bates, many others!

Keith Mattson

Seasons worked: 2000-2001

Funny Story or happening:

i really can't rember any specific funny time. every day was something funny going on. i would have to say the best one was a girl tryed to come in the park with a bag. and i was checking it becouse it went off in the metal dector. well when i opened it there as a 40oz of some beer in there. so i got 508 and the police officer at the time there. the girl said it was her brother's. but her brother wasn't even at the park. so she said he borrowed her car like 5 day's ago and must of stuck it in her bag when he was using her car. well the onlything about it was the beer was ice cold. so she was busted. and the look on her face when he said it was ice cold was the best i'll never forget it.

William Winston

Went by: Bill Winston

Seasons worked: 1968-1969

Funny Story or happening:

Pat Kersey was working on the Fiesta Train volcano and came into First Aid covered with the maroon "lava," having slipped and really messed up on of his shins. It was too serious an injury to be handled on-site, so the head nurse sent him over to the industrial clinic. On the way over to the clinic he took off his (hot, uncomfortable)artificial arm and walked into the clinic, covered with "maroon" carrying, what looked for all the world like his severed arm. The clinic nurse went nuts!
She dashed for his arm. He protested that it was his leg.
"No, it's your arm!" "It's my leg!"
"I'm a nurse and you're in shock." "It's my leg."
Finally he got her to calm down enough to show her his prosthesis and then show her his shin.
We got a FIREY phone call from the clinic telling us to give them the particulars on any other situations like that. We all had a great laugh at First Aid.

Eric Hansen

Seasons worked: 1985-1988

Funny Story or happening:

Too many to list, but this was one of the funnest jobs I ever had! Good times that come to mind include after-work socializing at the ITT parking lot across Road to Six Flags (I recall that they raised the drinking age from 19 to 21 during one of those years...you can buy it tonight but not tomorrow!), the trip to Twin Points at Eagle Mountain Lake, and, of course, the forced tram operations on the parking lot at closing time (not!). And who could forget battling the "warriors" at the Texas Arcade and the front lake....

Richard McDonald

Seasons worked: 1968

Funny Story or happening:

I remember SOME security guard getting his leg stuck in a turnstile at the front gate (while he was "guarding it") and maintenance had to take it apart to get him out, but I'll never tell WHO it was (and it probably wasn't funny to him)! It was only funny to those who were there (like my future wife - the former Jane Blood).

Beverly Mosher

Went by: Beverly Bennett (Teddy)

Seasons worked: 1983 - 1990?

Funny Story or happening:

In addition to the stuff from my last entry, I can remember hating being on the tower during the "great cricket invasion" year and loving it when the US High Diving Team was doing their shows. All the after hours parties, MOST of which I remember. I only wish my kids had a place like that to work, maybe I will have to ship them south to stay with Grandma for a summer or two so they can have as much (well maybe not AS much) fun as I did. Thanks to this site I found the other two Bobbsey Triplets... love you guys! Only wish I could make it to the reunion to see everybody.

I could write a novel about all the shenanigans we got into on deep nights.
Some in particular...turtle rides on the bobsled, tram races, ambulance races,
me and James Bell hanging Christmas lights from the top of a boom while we are
dancing to Beatles music. I swear, that thing should have toppled over. Rigging
the tx candy store for halloween, RV trip down to padre, and of course...all the
parties.

Jeffrey S. Finklea

Went by: Fink or Finklea

Seasons worked: 1978-1983

Funny Story or happening:

Well I have many to talk about but I think I was sworn to secrecy by my fellow Brothers, enjoy keeping Larry busy trying to stop my small parties in GP town from happening(Yea right!). Seeing Sutter with out a mustache at age 16. Singing "IT"S MILLER TIME" after a hard day of stopping govener jumpers or line jumpers and trespasers. Me and Wipf giving hell to the wash down crew while working midnights "100 feet hose to Good Time square have a good time". Having parties on the parking lot then across from 825 then across from 830 then overflow parking lot and then following the Arl. policeman who showed us the legendary "THE HOUSE". I miss the House.

Of course I miss all my friends from the best time of my life lucky to say most of you have stayed my friends ie. Sutter, Greg Henderson, Brian Atchison, Andy Underwood and so on. But I truley miss my Brotherhood the Bicardi Brothers what parties we had or where told to shut down by APD.

Funny story: Sutter and Brian loosen the hub caps on Brundedge car so they would fly off as he peels away in revervse since that was the only way for him to peel rubber (weak) Sutter putting Wipf MG between two trees. Ruben Making up songs about John Cordona to my Shiroma.
Me and Paul Block waiting in line all night for Journey tickets and being suspended for a whole weekend for stading by our fellow friend. Husling free ice oh say 300lbs for the parties. "The Men of Padre" Trip and what a trip, except for the ride home.

Funny Story or happening:

No funny stories that I can think of now. Just great memories. had a blast working security in the park. I'll always remember the time the tower was shut down due to lightning, and the long climb up the stairs. Always liked working the tower spying on trespassers. Then radioing it in and watching the unit swoop down on them. I always kissed the wall with my butt cheeks in the last tunnel of the runaway mine train when it would come by. Not sure who scared who there, me the guests or the snake down there. Loved them pink things. One night I sat and guarded Will Rogers, before he was ready for the public. I believe he finally met a man he didn't like that night. He was always staring at me, what was I to do. Really hated when the season came to an end. Enjoyed the flings and Mighty Joe Young movie.

Too many to tell, and I hope the Statute of limitations is up on some of them! I remember some wild nights involving trashcan punch and assorted liquors. I remember the women, the beautiful women whom we spent most of the time impressing or depressing. I remember times under the tree as parking lot crew, I remember having good friends that stood in my wedding. I remember the times our Guardian Angel saved our butts because we thought we were invincible and lived life to the edge. I remember Tram races, Chasing trespassers, standing post, having dinner with most of the guards and leaving the park unprotected. I worked the Texas Heat Wave in the parking lot dropping like flies! Rain or shine, we were there! Senior Nights, fights, fires, chasing shoplifters, and having a girl to talk to in every section! What times we had with the new Moped on the lot, tram spills, having races to open locked and running vehicles with hangers and a Slim Jim (a skill I still use). Pool Parties, FLINGS, after work parties, and ROAD TRIPS for lunch! I had such a good time working there, I don't know where all that money I made went, the hours of work and blown cash!

I remember a story of Richard Wipf chasing a couple of trespassers in the back area behind the Mini Mine Train and watching the guys eyes as we put them in the back of the Fire Prevention Truck. They looked at Richard and said "he don't have a gun!" I asked Richard what happened and he replied " I pointed by radio (Motorola 1000 with the stubby antenna) at them and told them I had a gun and I know how to use it!" Richard said that one stopped immediately and put his hands up in the air and the other disappeared into the bushes. The second guy returned within seconds walking with his hands up saying, " DON'T SHOOT!" I laughed so hard, right in front of the guys! Then there were the times we ran code three into wardrobe with no real siren but me with the megaphone over the top of the pick-up! The pot smokers in the back areas! Drinking too many strawberry daiquiris on Sunday nights at that restaurant! We had some GREAT TIMES!

Funny Story or happening:

There are many, but I will have to add them later as I have more time. I am a Captain with the Addison Fire Department and have been with them for eighteen years. I can tell you that whenever I relate a story about Six Flags, some of my guys will roll their eyes and say, "Oh, no! Not another Six Flags story!" I remember Paul Smith, KKen Berryhill, Bill Cruson, Looper, Tabor, the Archer City Flash, Phemister (both of them), Sam Martin and the rest of the UTA football team (yeah, they had a football team), Larry McGee, Dave White and Brown (they used to tell guests that they were brothers), Herman, Rodger Bruce (Butch Bruce and the Sundazed Kids), the two first female security officers, Neil Worsham, Dennis Brown, Jim and Karen Siddall, and a boat load of others. How many remember the snake rumors and the heat wave of 1980? How about an unofficial speil. "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to half-a-dozen banners over the Lone Star State!"? ... swim parties ... Flings ... flour digs ... infamous halloween parties (Klingon Warrior's wife?) and trips to New Braunfels?

Wow!!! funny story....hummm there were so many....There were many times
that the crew would meet, early in the morning and load up the trunk
of someones car with beer and wine coolers and head out to the lake
for the day. Skateboarding through the park after hours was fun.
Lightning hitting the tree at post 823 and the Jerry Lewis Telethon
were the funniest times. Making fun of Paul Vrable, that was fun.
There was an episode of tearing the front pockets of the shirts and
yelling "$5 dollars"....yeah, that was fun untill we got busted and
had to pay the $5 bucks...Jumping in the pool with uniform on and
drying off by the time you got to post 40...Alabama Concert--Rangers
Game: Both ended at the same time on several occasions this equaled Total
and complete chaos!!!! Now that was fun!!!

I have wonderful memories from my years at the park and too many stories to tell. Most of which would probably ban my childern from working at the park if I told them here. But I do remember someone sticking a straw in the exposed crack of an officer from Astroworld that bragged once too often about how great they were. He didn't even know it was there. I think I came to tears over that one.

So many great memories it is hard to decide one. Even though it may not have always shown at the time, I certainly learned the important lesson of laughter and not taking life so seriously. And yes, I was a little bit of a controversal person in my last season, but hey, now a lot of young kids are "outing" themselves, so I suppose that I was a "pre-revolutionary".

I'm sure looking forward to the reunion this June.

Be happy, life is much better that way,

What a joy it has been reading all the memories of other SFOT alums. So many familiar names, although my attempts to place faces with many have been futile. My greatest memories are of friendships I'll treasure for a lifetime and great fun. Notably:
  • - My proudest accomplishment...after much lobbying anyone I could get to listen and finally a letter to General Manager Dan Howell asserting that it would be " a step in the right direction for equal employment opportunity," I was hired as the first female security officer in May 1973. This fact may be disputed by some as it was more publicity worthy at the time to say Miss Arlington, Jan Parsons, who joined the security staff a month or so after me, was the first female guard.
  • - Ever-clear trash can punch parties at the apartment I shared with Ann Varga (GR). Do they still do that?
  • - Evacuating the park twice - once, for a bomb threat/extortion attempt; another time, for a tornado threat. After the bomb threat, the security guards were called on regularly to search trash cans for "bombs."
  • - Parking lot "Tram It" t-shirts. (I still have mine!)
  • - Lunch -- most of the officers came from all corners of the park daily to meet for lunch -- which left the park somewhat "un-secure."
  • - The "Phantom Flusher." Was the culprit ever nabbed or did he/she ever confess?
  • - Security night shift gatherings at a local pizza place every night/morning after closing. Pizza, pitchers of beer (Coke for me as I had not yet developed a taste for beer), and shooting the bull until the wee hours of the morning when the restaurant staff would finally throw us out so they could close up and go home.
  • - Lobbying Bruce Neal relentlessly and again anybody else who would listen (sound like a familiar theme?) to create the position of "Public Relations Intern" for me. My persistence paid off and I got the job for the 1977 season. It paved the way for becoming Assistant Manager of Public Relations in 1977-78. (With all due respect, some of the best stories/park legend have Bruce Neal in the center of them.)
So many stories, so little space...But most of all it's the friendships I remember. God bless you all. Would love to hear from any of you who remember me.
