Douglas Beers

Seasons worked: 1970-74

Funny Story or happening:

On a May Saturday Bruce Davidson of Flume 1 put me on dispatch and told me to send logs out as quickly as possible and "keep em coming" so we could operate at capacity. Well, I did a great job... even for 220 minutes after the high lift stopped. A "lift off" usually means 6-8 logs at the belt, I managed about 34. Jacques deMont was just starting as supervisor that week and he couldn't believe anybody was that dumb...
How bout when I was working on Skull Island and I saw smoke pouring out of the Chaps cars and called the Fire dept.....It was just the train belching out carbon......

Brian Wright

Seasons worked: 88-94

Funny Story or happening:

Ahh the memories. I guess the few that stick out are...
Climbing the cliff at Rapids and throwing pebbles at the person at SP2. I have to laugh at this because rarely did they ever figure out were they were coming from. One day the victim turned around and started yelling at a kid and was threatening to have him thrown out of the park. Needless to say I had to come out of hiding and fix that particular incident.

Working in Mine Train's back area we were installing fence poles for a path to lead the guest out when there was a break down. Chris Ulrich really wanted to do this and picked a poor location to drive the next one in. A couple of seconds later there was a "pretty Rainbow" over his head as he drove it into a water pipe.

At the beginning of the '91 season as we were cycling Splash a boat had reached the top of the lift and decided it didn't want to make that journey again and came back down the lift. We cleared the driver's box just in time to avoid the huge wave coming over. The mechanics were there before we could even call it in. They could see and smell the cloud of smoke that was made by the boat sliding over the rubber on the bongozee(sp) wood.

The stories told while working in some of the darkest holes on workcrew.
Having to massage the flex on engine so people didn't have to work with a particular person more than once a week.
Being called a bunch of panzies by a security officer when we called him out to remove a snake from Flume 1's pit. We all laughed at him each time he jumped when the snake came too close to him. BTW it was a cottonmouth.
The football that got caught in the auger at the ice house.(How did that get in there?)
Too many scooter stories....

I guess I'll stop there, don't need to bring to many more up.

Gordon Hale

Seasons worked: 1970-1973

Funny Story or happening:

When I first worked at Six Flags in 1970 it was at the Happy Motoring cars. Later I got shifted to the Petting Zoo where I stayed until I left in 1973. One of the customs for new male members of the Zoo was to be tossed into the seal pool after hours. My foreman at the time and two helpers chased me through the park for a whole hour trying to give me the customary dunking. I was younger and quicker and managed to elude them. I was the only night shift employee in 1971 that avoided the pool trip.

Areas of Park: Petting Zoo, Flying Jenny, Mini Mine Train

People to find: Leslie Gerard, Susan Spradlin

Other info: Although the Zoo may be considered an attraction, in the early seventies it was run by Ride Operations-Clarence Roberts and Margie among others.

Went by: Pennington

Seasons worked: 1990 & 1991

Funny Story or happening:

Where do I begin???

The summer of 1990 at the Chute out:
- I had the WORST farmer's tan imaginable! We used to play like we were getting plenty of shade by standing in the shadow of the itsy bitsy cables.
- For a few weeks there was this mean and nasty crow that had made it's nest in the bushes near the park's paremeter. We'd see it get pissd of and fly over the fence and attack people. We'd be laughing our heads off as we listened to the screams. Debra's grandmother told us that if we stuck 1 hand up in the air as we passed by it, it would leave us alone. As funny as we looked, neither one of us ever got attacked by it.
- One hot and hell-esque day, our asst foreman left Debra and I outside without rest for 2 1/2 hours. We had a que-full with no way of running to the tube for water. Some of the guests were worried about us and went and got us some ice water. I thought that I was going to DIE that day. Troy stayed WAY to comfortable in the A/C of the tube.
- We labeled the elevator shaft inside the tube as our "venting room". We'd go inside and yell and scream, then emerge with six flags smiles on.
- We'd laugh at people that 1)ran from ride to ride 2)asked us how to get to the chute-out (hello? It's 200 feet high. Walk towards it) 3)tried to get around the trashcan that was completely blocking the que line because we were closed.

Summer of 1991 The Texas Giant

-I loved, loved, loved working at the Giant. Again, Debra Uselton and I worked together again.
-I remember a few times that the icky swamp next to it flooded after heavy rains and we were told to fetch the floating trashcan. Fish were nibbling at us all the while and it was just really gross.
-If you pissed of the foreman, you had "gum removal detail" :P
-We used to race down the train to see how fast we could check the lap bars.
-I thought that the hike to the train check area was cool. When the song "counting blue cars" came out, it reminded me of passing time up there counting...well, blue cars.

Being 16 and 17 years of age and hanging out with the "college crowd" after work was SUCH a big deal. We just had so much fun!

Misc things that I remember:

-I HATED working at the bumper cars. I'd have black boogers for DAYS after working there. That can't be healthy.
-I HATED working splashwater falls until closing. We'd have to wade through the stinky feet water, trying to find lost articles.
-Sometimes the crew from Cliffhanger would call, needing someone to come and do a ride check when someone had called in late. I'd always get voted to go. So there I am, facing a completely desolate park. All is quiet and serene until my shriek pierced the air. I just could not help but scream on that ride.

Funny Story or happening:

OMG There is SOOOO much to fit on here...
-Falling in the trough at Gold River while trying to push a heavy load boat off the brake and getting my entire foot and leg wet (guess I got lucky on that one...)
-Working at Loon(e)y Land
-Having to quit after my first five months there due to transportation problems and knowing THE VERY DAY that I processed out that I would be coming back as soon as I could...
-With all due respect here... Being told (teasingly, of course) by Steve Martindale not to fall while polishing the boiler (and I almost did one day...)
-This wasn't funny at the time, but now I laugh thinking about it... Getting a diesel shower from Vance one night while putting up the engine when I first became an engineer (was that on purpose-i.e. an initiation?? j/k HaHa) then pulling back under the water tower to wash off me and the tender and changing into Ray's overalls for the trip home so that I wouldn't have to stink up my car and huff diesel fumes all the way home
-Getting the conductor's "Initiation" in summer '99 (Engineers who did that YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! HaHaHa...) and walking off the back to the engine (so they could see their finished product- LOL) with a BLACK FACE in front of all those guests (giving them an indicator of the authenticity of the engines)- then laughing myself to tears after realizing what had happened
-Being at TX depot to see the aftermath of the engineers sanding and smoking out on Kyle and Jason
-45 minute wait for the "Terror Train" during Fright Fest and queuing the line across the crossing at TX Depot (and we still got out on time miraculously enough!!)
-Tracy, Melanie and others playing that baby sock joke on Kyle... did he ever see that sock at all or hear of the joke (if you were there you know what I am talking about...)?
-Smoking out Life 1 on Mine train when the attendant did not wave at us (Hey I'm not the only one...)
-Dumping water on unsuspecting guests as they passed under Boomtown trestle
-Going out for a late nite snack (OK I'll admit it... Frosties for dinner!- so nutritious) after work
-Work Crew days and helping Entertainment with Fright Fest setup and getting free dinner...
-REAL SNOW on snowhill!!!
-Getting mown down by sleds at Snowhill while catching them (or trying to anyways... LOL) after loading sleds for an hour
- OK I think anymore of these will crash this website... I have had the time of my life at SFOT so far and look forward to many more fond memories, so those of you who knew me drop me a line!!

Seasons worked: 1987-1992

Funny story or happening
I have many, many fond memories from these years of which a lot can/will never be told. Here's a bunch of the mild ones:
For the old Engine Crew(s),
-"oiling" anything that anyone else may touch or sit on,
-the infamous "Anaconda",
-all the "training" videos we shot. "Diff heerz da fire!"
-the Roundhouse "library"
-running hot into the stations and big-holing to a perfect stop
-flirting with the conductors and crossing attendants
-the ruthless "smoking" of unsuspecting souls
-dumping water on Mine Train riders approaching Lift 3
-the "northstar" and "toxic waste"
During the Rapids days,
-Swimming, diving and/or wading in the trough
-dumping cups of water on SP2 from the big waterfall
-"nozzling" riders, especially during check rides.
(I still claim to be grand champion after getting people in the q-line bridge and walkway wet)
-throwing chairs, water, etc. while dispatching
-Island football
>From work crew,
-At Splash, hitting Steven Warner in the back with a rotten plum from about 60 yards.
-shooting Wayne Wood in the a$% from point blank range with the Hotsy. He's quit the dancer.
-Turtle races from Looneyland to Cliffhanger
-Hose wars at Flume, Splash and Rapids.

-Pancho's!!!
-playing Spades in any temperate room where we could hide
-Scooter races
-snowball fights
Last, there were great times outside of the park:
-thursday trips to the lake
-tubin' trips (anyone remember the Mohican Cliffs?)
-sitting at Two Pesos slamming Margarita's and doing jalapeno shots.
-sunday morning football at Lamar (the wetter the better)
-annual trips to Port A or skiing.
I wouldn't trade those days for anything but neither would I want to live them again. I still wonder how I survived them the first time.

Seasons worked: 1992-1996

Funny story or happening
I do not think there is just one story that I would like to share. However, some of my best memories happened at the park. If the supervisors new some of the things my friends and I did, I might not have made it past the first year. What can be expected from someone who learned everything from Stephan Henning. We did it all from throwing pumpkins from the top of Giant to making Vandgaurd fireballs to loading the trains as fast as we could to try to throw off the photo eyes and safty blocks (In 1992 we did perfect the art of backing up the trains so the computer would stop one at saftey brake.) The other thing was taking long brakes to the "cooler", for those who know what I talking about, that was the best place to do paperwork. In 1996 I was really the only one who knew how to break Yo-Yo whenever I wanted. I had the mechanics fooled. The only thing they could come up with was, " the motor is overheating" Yeah right, that's what happened when I was scheduled to work there. And who can forget those ri
ver trips, those stories require a page of their own.

Funny story or happening:

My mind is flooding with wonderful memories! Sweeping the streets of the Modern section and hanging around modern lift to talk to Kevin Donavan. Being grounded for a week after going to my first Six Flags Party. It was worth it!

Getting around my parent's rule of no date no party. All I had to do was have a friend come pick me up and pose as my date. My parent's eased up after the first year. I spent many years working at the Cave but that first year was hard to beat. Working with George Schoonover and Taylor Evans.

George gave me my nick name that stuck for many years. I worked doubles at almost every other ride and had a blast but it just didn't get any better working at the Cave!
