Default David Photo Stories and Pictures II

Let the stories, memories, and pictures continue!

First of all, I'd like to say a big

THANK YOU!!!!!

to Jason Williams (Jake) and Charlie Stephenson (Lenny) for mailing me their scopes and letting me scan & post them. Guys feel free to chime in if you want to annotate any of these images. Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated!

If anyone has scopes they'd like me to scan for them I will do it free of charge, just send a private message or e-mail me. If you take the little pictures out of the scopes and send me only those they can be mailed quite cheaply.

Now, on to the memories...

Default Holiday in the Park, 1988

Here we have Chuck, Jake, and John(?) from the 1988 Holiday in the Park crew.

They're posing in modern with those old green jackets and Charlie's sporting a scarf! It looks cold.

I wonder why the guy on the right is wearing two name tags?

Default Jake Gives Directions

Here's a HIP 88 shot of jake giving directions.

The nearest hot chocolate is that way!

Man that hot chocolate rocked. I remember the plastic mugs filled with hot chocolate and they had whipped cream on top. I worked HIP 87 & 88 and had about 20 plastic HIP mugs in my cabinet at home.

Default Canteen Shot HIP 88

We spent a lot of time in the canteen, so I'm glad we've got this shot.

I had so little money my first season (I was 16 y/o & made $3.23 an hour!) that I would usually get a grilled cheese for .60 cents since it was the cheapest thing on the menu. Later I figured out I could get a hamburger and put free salad bar condiments on it to bulk it up.

Looks like those are old SFOT pictures on the wall behind us? I don't remember those. Too bad we don't have scans of them!

I just recalled a few more canteen memories. I remember Doug Krause & I playing some arcade game in the canteen with the Europe song 'Final Dountdown' blaring in the background.

My favorite stuff from the canteen during 1988, when I had more money, was:
Huge breakfast burritos
Chicken fajita sandwiches
Large Dr. Peppers
Mint Mentos
and Mississippi mud cake ice cream sandwiches.

I could eat it all and I never gained a pound thanks to that 17 year old metabolism. I'll start crying now.

Default Girls Posing In Our Back Room

Hmmmm....

I thought that guests were not allowed to come into employee areas.

How could something like this have happened?

Default We Love Our Job

I have a question for you:

When was the last time you enjoyed your job so much you came in on your day off just to hang out?

Here we have Jake and Charlie visiting the park on their day off and Christy is hugging Charlie. She is the one that gave Charlie the Lenny nickname, so that mystery has been solved.

The carousel in the background was new (in that location, anyway) that season.

Also, Charlie's U2 shirt is from the Joshua Tree concert that he and Jake had attended recently. It's been almost twenty years lads, feel old yet?

Funny thing about the Canteen. It was the only place in the park a vegetarian could get real food. (other than Fries or Nachos). I used to get the Mac & Cheese and Broccoli. Quite a good meal for around $2 and change..

Heck, the food in the Canteen was way better than what was available to the guests in the park.

Default Back Room 1987

My wife found this picture in her photos yesterday and I scanned it for upload.

This picture is of Jay on the left punching pictures out of a roll and John Evans (me) warding off demons or something. Shawn Lafountain is taking the picture. Shawn was our manager, but he was also an actual real life photographer. He took lots of photos of everyone working that I'd love to get scans of. I bet he's got tons of scopes too. Maybe one day he'll find this site?

Looking at this picture you can see:
  • BERNICE! Check out the gray cabinet looking thing on the right.
  • How we punched pictures out for scopes
  • How the trays were filled with caps
  • The hairdryer contraption used to dry manually developed rolls (at the time of the photo we didn't use it because we had Bernice)
  • Black and yellow bulk loaders to Jay's right that we used to load our AGFA film
  • One side of our schedule board that shows the names: Thurman, Jay, Sheldon (Grimm), Beth, and Chris (Grimm?)
  • The spray deodorant can (upper right side of the picture) that was purchased by a female employee who got sick of the body odor of another employee (no it was not me thank you very much) and would sometimes spray a cloud of deodorant at him on particularly foul days
  • The hairspray can (ultra super maximum strength) that the girls used to maintain their 80's hairstyles
